Careers & Outcomes

A specific curriculum may lead to a Master of Arts, Master of Science or Master of Education in areas such as clinical mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling or addiction counseling, school counseling or marriage, couple and family counseling. Full-time on-campus students accepted into the dual degree program can complete the requirements for both Divinity and Master of Arts in Counseling degrees in four years instead of the usual five.

As a counselor, you will work with clients who are impacted by psychological, social, behavioral and emotional issues. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is designed to prepare licensed professional counselors who will work with children, adolescents and/or adults in community agency settings. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program meets the academic and internship requirements for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in the State of Mississippi. At the end of their coursework, students are eligible to sit for National Counselor Exam (NCE) to become a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor (P-LPC). This provisional license is the first step to full licensure offered by the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors.

Applicants who have no clinical training or who need more than 18 semester hours for certification are not eligible for the Advanced Counseling Certificate in School Counseling. At the master’s level, we offer CACREP-accredited programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and in School Counseling. We teach you to function as an advocate for students and to be an agent of individual and group-level change within school and community environments. You learn to develop, implement, and sustain programs for students that enable them to effectively participate in and contribute to our diverse society. Requirements for practicum hours range from 100 to 300 hours, with students interacting with supervisors throughout the practicum, which usually lasts a minimum of a full academic term or 10 weeks. Students work with clients under supervision, and they also attend meetings, participate in trainings, help with administrative and support tasks and more. You can complete online coursework to become a counselor, but you must complete fieldwork requirements in person.
